Life#
Hüseyin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1896/97, Hüseyin began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1904/05 places Hüseyin in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Haydarpaşa.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 200 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Haydarpaşa, when one in ten paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 8,400 kuruş, 36 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
