Life#
Ali Refik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Refik also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1897/98, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1900/01, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Ali Refik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 200 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less.
