Life#
Born in Bandırma in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Zekeriyya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Zekeriyya also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1897/98, Zekeriyya began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1900/01, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Zekeriyya in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul.
The salary went from 80 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 120 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 6,960 kuruş, 20 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
