Life#
İbrahim Vehbi Efendi was born in Bandırma in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
İbrahim Vehbi began work in Bandırma in 1885/86, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with İbrahim Vehbi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bandırma, the birthplace. For 1890 to 1896 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Vehbi to Skopje in 1896/97. The last posts were in Pristina (Priştine) from 1897 to 1906, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1905/06 as a chief official (Başmemur).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 540 in 1905/06, as Başmemur in Pristina, when 62 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
