Life#
Abdulgafur Sufi Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1870/71 (AH 1287), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Evrak Muduru". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdulgafur Sufi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1889/90, Abdulgafur Sufi began work in Diyarbakır, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Abdulgafur Sufi in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1901/02, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1895/96. The last post was in Midyat in 1902/03, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
