Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Raif Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Abdullah Raif had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1892/93, at about 23, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Abdullah Raif in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Abdullah Raif to Cizre in 1894/95 and Malatya in 1895/96, then back to Diyarbakır, the birthplace, from 1896 to 1905. The last post was in Akçadağ in 1905/06.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 540 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
