Life#
Born in Yozgat in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Mehmet Şevki Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Yozgat in 1887/88, at about 14, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Mehmet Şevki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Adana. Mehmet Şevki then moved to Mersin in 1894/95, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), and Edremit in 1896/97. The last posts were in Aydın from 1897 to 1901.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 540 in 1897/98, as Muhabere Memuru in Aydın, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
