Life#
Born in Ödemiş in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Alim Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Alim also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Ödemiş in 1891/92, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Mehmet Alim in Kuşadası as an official (Memur). Mehmet Alim then moved to Çanakkale in 1894/95, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Aydın from 1895 to 1904. The last posts were in Demirci in 1904/05, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) and Ödemiş, the birthplace, in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 540 in 1904/05, as 3. Müdür in Demirci, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
