Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Şevki Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Ahmet Şevki had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Çatalca in 1892/93, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1893/94, to 1900/01, every annual entry places Ahmet Şevki in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Çatalca.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Çatalca, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 250 kuruş. In all, eight years of salary come to 24,900 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
