Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Abdülvahap Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a colonel (miralay). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1885/86, at about 13, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Abdülvahap as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Malko Tarnovo (Tırnovacık). Abdülvahap then moved to Istanbul and Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1892 to 1898. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1899 to 1903, with a rise to a post in the custody of the cash chest (Sandık Emaneti).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 750 in 1899/1900, the peak, in the Sandık Emaneti in Istanbul, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
