Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Fahrettin Efendi was the child of a policeman (polis). Fahrettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Fahrettin in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1904/05. In 1905/06 the lists place Fahrettin in Kayseri, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 400 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kayseri, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 15 years the salaries add up to 36,900 kuruş, 41 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
