Life#
İbrahim İhsan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 70 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1903/04 places İbrahim İhsan in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 70 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 250 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less.
