Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Halit Tosun Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Tablekar". Halit Tosun had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1905/06 places Halit Tosun in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 270 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 22 per cent of paid officials earned less.
