Life#
Mustafa Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa also attended the telegraph school.
At about 15, in 1879/80, Mustafa began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1884/85 to 1906/07 places Mustafa in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace. A career like this is rare; 41 of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 1,200 in 1905/06, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 133,320 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
