Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Erdetsi Ohanyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi). In all Erdetsi Ohanyan knew four languages, Armenian, English, French and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Erdetsi Ohanyan began work in Istanbul in 1880/81, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Erdetsi Ohanyan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu. Next came Çanakkale from 1884 to 1888, then Izmir (İzmir) from 1888 to 1899, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Gevgelija (Gevgili) from 1899 to 1905, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1904/05 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 600 in 1904/05, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Gevgelija, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
