Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1843/44 (AH 1259), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); the official also attended the telegraph school, and spoke Armenian and French.
Work began in Istanbul in 1862/63, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 566 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places the official in Beyoğlu as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1867/68. The official then moved to Niš in 1868/69, as Huk Memuru, then back to Beyoğlu from 1869 to 1876. Next came Galata from 1876 to 1878, with a rise to Telgraf Mektebi Muallimi in 1876/77, then Büyükdere from 1878 to 1882. From 1882 to 1901 every annual entry places the official in Izmir (İzmir). Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 38 years or more.
Pay rose from 566 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to a peak of 1,250 in 1876/77, as Telgraf Mektebi Muallimi in Galata, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 38 years the salaries add up to 473,748 kuruş, 1.9 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
