Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community, Alfons Mullery Ef was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Alfons Mullery had four years of schooling, at the Latin Mektebi, and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Italian.
Work began in Mosul (Musul) in 1864/65, at about 22, paid from the start, on 1,056 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Alfons Mullery in Mosul as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1866/67. The lists have no entry for 1867 to 1898. Next came Haifa in 1898/99 and Yeniköy in 1899/1900. From 1900 to 1905 the annual entries place Alfons Mullery in Beyoğlu. A career like this is rare; 5 of the 171 officials whose entries span 40 years or more kept one title throughout.
