Life#
Dençoylu Hayler Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took seven years, at the Latin Mektebi; Dençoylu Hayler also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 18, in 1881/82, Dençoylu Hayler began work in Mosul (Musul), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Dençoylu Hayler as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Diyarbakır. Dençoylu Hayler then moved to Mosul and Mount Athos (Aynaroz) from 1887 to 1891, then Sefaköy from 1891 to 1898. The annual lists then follow Dençoylu Hayler to Vlorë (Avlonya) from 1899 to 1905. The last posts were in Gaza in 1905/06 and Ioannina (Yanya) in 1906/07. Six provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 1,350 in 1897/98, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Sefaköy, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 900 kuruş. In all, 20 years of salary come to 189,000 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
