Life#
Born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1863/64 (AH 1280), Dikran Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Dikran had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi), wrote Turkish and spoke Armenian and French, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Edirne in 1881/82, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Dikran as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Keşan, where the entries run to 1885/86. From 1887 to 1891 the annual entries place Dikran in Edirne.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 400 in 1884/85, as Muhabere Memuru in Keşan, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1890/91.
