Life#
Born in Vezirköprü in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Ohannes Fikri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ohannes Fikri had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi), and wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 19, in 1882/83, Ohannes Fikri began work in Beypazarı, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Ohannes Fikri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Burdur. Next came Isparta from 1888 to 1891, then Ioannina (Yanya) from 1891 to 1896. The last posts were in Ersekë (Kolonya) from 1896 to 1900 and Balıkesir from 1900 to 1902.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 500 in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
