Life#
Born in Florina in 1864/65 (AH 1281), Aleko Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi). In all Aleko knew four languages, French and Greek (Rum) in writing and Bulgarian and Turkish in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 20, in 1884/85, Aleko began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1886/87, to 1893/94, every annual entry places Aleko in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 300 in 1888/89, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 12 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 28,440 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
