Life#
Born in Katerini (Katerin) in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Salih Vasfi Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Salih Vasfi had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1876/77, Salih Vasfi began work in Katerini, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Salih Vasfi in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Salih Vasfi then moved to Vushtrri in 1882/83, then back to Thessaloniki from 1883 to 1901, with a rise to a post in the custody of the cash chest (Sandık Emaneti) in 1890/91. The last posts were in Bitola in 1901/02 and Thessaloniki again in 1902/03.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 900 in 1898/99, the peak, in the Sandık Emaneti in Thessaloniki, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 173,160 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
