Life#
Abdülmecit Efendi was born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1855/56 (AH 1272), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülmecit also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 17, in 1873/74, Abdülmecit began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Beirut, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Abdülmecit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tripoli (Trablusşam). Abdülmecit then moved back to Beirut, the birthplace, from 1876 to 1880, then Sidon (Sayda), Beirut and Jenin (Cenin) from 1880 to 1887, with a rise to chief official (Başmemur) in 1886/87. From 1888 to 1901 every annual entry places Abdülmecit again in Beirut.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 700 in 1900/01, in the custody of the cash chest (Sandık Emaneti) in Beirut, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 129,660 kuruş, 83 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01. Abdülmecit received a rank (rütbe).
