Life#
Hüseyin Hasan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 17, in 1873/74, Hüseyin Hasan began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Hüseyin Hasan in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur). Next came Demirtas in 1876/77, then Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) from 1877 to 1883. Hüseyin Hasan then moved to Adana from 1883 to 1888, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then back to Istanbul from 1888 to 1901, with a rise to Mevrude Basmemuru in 1890/91. The last posts were in Sivas from 1901 to 1904.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 1,935 in 1895/96, as Mevrude Basmemuru in Istanbul, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,740 kuruş. In all, 28 years of salary come to 384,060 kuruş, 2.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
