Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Murat Ali Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Murat Ali had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 17, in 1873/74, Murat Ali began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Murat Ali as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace. From 1876 to 1899 every annual entry places Murat Ali in Emirgan, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 390 in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Emirgan, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 95,700 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1898/99, the list of 1899/1900 (AH 1317) gives the status word Vefat (death).
