Life#
Mehmed Kâzım Bey was born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Abdulhamit Kahvecibasilik". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 19, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. From 1875/76 to 1894/95 every annual entry places Mehmed Kâzım in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as Enderunu Humayun, from 1889/90 in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 400 in 1892/93, the peak, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less.
