Life#
Abdülhadi Efendi was born in Artvin (Livane) in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Artvin in 1874/75, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Abdülhadi in Artvin, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1880/81. Abdülhadi then moved to six places in 15 years, from Merzifon to Ağrı (Karakilise), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1891/92. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1896 to 1901.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 800 in 1899/1900, in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in Istanbul, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 143,880 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
