Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Hasan Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Hasan began work in Basra in 1869/70, at about 14, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Hasan in Basra as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1876/77. Hasan then moved to Nasiriyah (Nasıriye) from 1877 to 1878, then Diyarbakır from 1878 to 1886. The annual lists then follow Hasan to Mosul (Musul) from 1887 to 1889, then Al-Shatrah (Şatra) from 1889 to 1899, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1895/96. Next came Al-Aziziyah in 1899/1900, then Hillah (Hille) from 1900 to 1905. The last post was in Al Diwaniyah (Divaniye) in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 900 in 1899/1900, as 2. Müdür in Al-Aziziyah, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 240,240 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
