Life#
Born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Hüseyin Niyazi Efendi came from the Kıpti (as recorded) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Niyazi also wrote Bulgarian as well as Turkish.
Hüseyin Niyazi began work in Edirne in 1873/74, at about 17, paid from the start, on 135 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Hüseyin Niyazi in Edirne as Siyar Mukayyit. Hüseyin Niyazi then moved to Plovdiv, Pazarcık and Istanbul from 1875 to 1879, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1878/79, then back to Edirne from 1880 to 1882. Next came Karacaali, Ardino (Eğridere) and Vize from 1885 to 1895, then Ivaylovgrad (Ortaköy) from 1895 to 1900. The last posts were in Fasatu from 1901 to 1903 and Zawiya (Zaviye) in 1903/04, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1901/02. Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 135 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 900 in 1901/02, as 2. Müdür in Fasatu, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
