Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1854/55 (AH 1271), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Plovdiv in 1871/72, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Osman Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Plovdiv, the birthplace. Next came Izmir (İzmir) from 1878 to 1886. From 1886 to 1897 every annual entry places Osman Nuri in Milas. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 600 in 1886/87, as Muhabere Memuru in Milas, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 21 years the salaries add up to 124,200 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
