Life#
This official was born in Manisa in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Izmir (İzmir) in 1878, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 145 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1879/80, places the official in Izmir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The official then moved to Denizli in 1881/82, then back to Izmir from 1882 to 1888. The annual lists then follow the official to Chios in 1888/89. From 1889 to 1904 every annual entry places the official again in Izmir. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 145 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 450 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Izmir, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 113,040 kuruş, 75 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
