Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Kıyıköy (Midye) in 1893/94, at about 30, paid from the start, on 475 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 30 or older. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Ahmet Hamdi in Kıyıköy as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Saray from 1894 to 1904. The last post was in Kalecik in 1904/05, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 475 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 500 in 1904/05, as 3. Müdür in Kalecik, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
