Life#
Aram Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father's occupation was "Posta Mufettisi". Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Aram knew five languages, Armenian, English, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Izmir (İzmir) in 1881/82, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1882/83, to 1891/92, every annual entry places Aram in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Izmir.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 1,000 in 1890/91, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Izmir, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1891/92. Aram probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre İstanbul doğumlu Ermeni devlet adamları" by HARUN TUNCA (2016) (the name and the birthplace agree).
