Life#
Born in Akhisar in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Agop Remzi Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Agop Remzi also wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Armenian.
Agop Remzi began work in Akhisar in 1884/85, at about 21, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Agop Remzi in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Agop Remzi to Chios in 1893/94. The last posts were in Izmir (İzmir) from 1894 to 1897.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 400 in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Chios, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 385 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
