Life#
Mehmet İzzet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Kapucu". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1877/78, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Mehmet İzzet as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Beirut (Beyrut). For 1882 to 1885 the lists have no entry. Mehmet İzzet then moved to Skopje (Üsküp) and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1885 to 1890, with a rise to a post in the Emanet Kitabeti in 1887/88. From 1890 to 1909 every annual entry places Mehmet İzzet in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 1,000 in 1903/04, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 214,800 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
