What the job was
Travelling official (seyyar memur) of the post, who travelled with the mail. Documents of the 1890s speak of postal travelling officials assigned to the trains of the Rumelian railway and of mail bags carried to Europe by travelling officials.
History
An unsigned memorandum of 1892 complained that the travelling officials on the Rumelian trains were young men of various nations on generous salaries, and accused them of working for the foreign post offices.
