Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Yusuf Cemil Bey was the child of a chief telegraph director (telgraf başmüdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Yusuf Cemil also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Yusuf Cemil began work in Adana in 1891/92, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1895/96 to 1902/03 places Yusuf Cemil in the same post, travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), in Beirut, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Seyyar Memur in Beirut, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
