Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 19, in 1896/97, Mehmet began work in Beirut, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with Mehmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Acre (Akka), where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Jaffa (Yafa) from 1903 to 1906 and Beirut, the birthplace, in 1906/07.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 450 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
