Life#
Born in Mardin in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Petri Mahir Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Petri Mahir had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Mardin in 1882/83, at about 16, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Petri Mahir in Jaffa (Yafa) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Acre (Akka) from 1900 to 1903.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 320 in 1898/99, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Jaffa, when one in four paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 46,800 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
