Life#
Born in Mardin in 1884/85 (AH 1302), Tevfik Efendi came from the Syriac Christian (Süryani) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Tevfik also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 17, in 1902/03, Tevfik began work in Basra, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Tevfik in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Basra.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Basra, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
