Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Salih Zeki also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1901/02, Salih Zeki began work in Yakube, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1906/07, with Salih Zeki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Basra. The last post was in Al-Aziziyah (Aziziye) in 1908/09.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Basra, when one in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
