Life#
Abdurrahman Sırrı Efendi was born in Kičevo (Kırçova) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdurrahman Sırrı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Abdurrahman Sırrı began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1900/01, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Abdurrahman Sırrı in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Bitola (Manastır).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Bitola, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 9,000 kuruş, 54 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
