Life#
Born in Mustafakemalpaşa (Kirmasti) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Mümtaz Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Ali Mümtaz had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Mustafakemalpaşa in 1902/03, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1908/09, every annual entry places Ali Mümtaz in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Ankara.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Ankara, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 12,000 kuruş, 49 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
