Life#
Hafız Mesut Efendi was born in Ankara in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1892/93, Mesut began work in the Rusumat Kalemi in Ankara, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1892/93 to 1909/10 places Mesut in Ankara, the birthplace, first as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), from 1900/01 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) and from 1909/10 as Evkaf Baskitabeti.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 600 in 1909/10, as Evkaf Baskitabeti in Ankara, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10. Mesut received a medal.
