Life#
Born in Ankara in 1875/76 (AH 1292), İbrahim Ethem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a muezzin. İbrahim Ethem had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1889/90, İbrahim Ethem began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Çorum, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places İbrahim Ethem in Rize as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). İbrahim Ethem then moved to Tutak from 1894 to 1898, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95, then Kastamonu from 1899 to 1904. The last posts were in Çorum from 1904 to 1906.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 500 in 1894/95, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Tutak, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
