Life#
Osman Vehbi Efendi was born in Ankara in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a deputy judge (naib). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 13, in 1888/89, Osman Vehbi began work in Ankara, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. Every annual entry from 1895/96 to 1899/1900 places Osman Vehbi in the same post, postal official (Posta Memuru), in Ankara, the birthplace.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 400 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Ankara, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
