Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Ruantuvan Efendi came from the Christian (Hristiyan) community, French (Fransiz) by nationality; the father's occupation was "Banker". Schooling took seven years, at the Saint Yareb Mektebi; Ruantuvan also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Italian. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, no other studied at Saint Yareb Mektebi.
At about 32, in 1887/88, Ruantuvan began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1887/88 to 1906/07 places Ruantuvan in the same post, postal official (Posta Memuru), in Galata. A career like this is rare; 41 of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 750 in 1903/04, when four in five paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 126,780 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
