Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Ahmet Avni Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 19, in 1889/90, Ahmet Avni began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Ahmet Avni as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Galata, where the entries run to 1908/09. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1909 to 1912, with a rise to Mesalihi Kalemi Muduru and to PT Umum Mudur Muavini in 1911/12.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 5,000 in 1911/12, as PT Umum Mudur Muavini in Istanbul, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less.
