Life#
Born in Aytos (Aydos) in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (katip). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Tuzla in 1882/83, at about 13, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 95 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Hüseyin Hüsnü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tuzla. Hüseyin Hüsnü then moved to Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde), Selimiye and Rashaya (Raşeya) from 1891 to 1897, then back to Selimiye from 1897 to 1900. The last post was in Adana in 1900/01. Al Hudaydah, about 3,450 km from Aytos, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 27 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 95 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 500 in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Selimiye, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
