Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Jerusalem (Kudüs) in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1886/87, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Beirut (Beyrut), with 14 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 800 kuruş. Only 4 of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for 14 years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with Mehmet Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in El-ahza, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Ma'an (Maan) from 1904 to 1906.
